Jason Cockrum is most often described as "One fishy Mo Fo". This guy grew up in the Sierra Nevada mountains and has been participating in the sport of fly fishing for many years. His father Dan Cockrum is also a local guide and got Jay started at a young age. After spending many years mastering the Truckee, Jason decided he would turn his hobby into his career. These days Jay divides his time between the Truckee River and Clear Water House in Northern California. He has worked for Dave Stanly and Andy Burk at the Reno Fly Shop, and Dick Gallond at Clear Water House for over 7 seasons now. Jay is a top notch, super professional guide. Most of his clients say he is a man of few words, but when he does speak you better listen. Jason doesn't like to have to repeat himself, so if you miss a few words because you weren't paying attention, your likely to miss some important stuff.
I first met Jason at a snow board contest in 1997. We were both sponsored at the time and competing in the same circuit. We spent more time talking fishing than paying attention to our heats. The next time we met was later that summer at Clear Water Guide School. Jason was already one of the instructors there. It soon became apparent to me that Jason was not just your average recreational fisherman, he was already a master of the sport. Over the next several years he has further honed his skills and perfected the art of guiding. Jason is now considered one of the top guides in the state. So if you are looking for some expert instruction in the Truckee area contact the Reno Fly shop for a day out on the water. If Hat Creek, The Pit, Berny Creek, Fall River, or the Trinity sound fun, check into a weekend at Clear Water House located on Hat Creek, near Berny California. Also watch Jason display some of his skills in the recent release of FISHEYE 2. Season of the Mayfly.
